Recommended Baseline PSD Specification
Recommended Baseline PSD Text

This document recommends a reasonable launch point for PSD for most stations within the next 6 - 12 months.

Our recommended baseline PSD text service is based on three factors:

  • Reasonable expectations for start-up station implementation, given the current state of the technology
  • The interests of public radio stations
  • The minimum requirements needed to ensure public radio's inclusion in emerging applications, such as electronic program guides

We recommend that the minimum baseline for PSD text services in public radio be SeriesTitle, SeriesDescription, and SeriesGenre as defined in detail in the document Suggested PSD Field Descriptions Version 0.2

The first two elements of this baseline are display fields that can be viewed on currently available HD Radio receivers.  While stations have expressed interest in displaying information beyond 'SeriesTitle' and 'SeriesDescription' (see our survey results summary), these two fields require the minimum of staff time to input and maintain, and therefore represent a basic standard.

We recommend including the internal 'SeriesGenre' tag (which is not displayed on HD radios), so that if and when 'find by format' functions become available to consumers, public radio stations will be easily findable by listeners.

The element "SeriesID" is purposely not included in this baseline description, as it is assumed that in many cases this information will be programmed directly into a Text Scheduling Unit rather than scheduled into an automation system. However, in cases where PSD data needs to be reconciled with a given piece of audio by an external application this field will be necessary.  See the document  Application Notes for a more detailed discussion.
